Next Generation Data Centre and Services
Eco-system Design

Rationale

Over the last decade, we have seen the business of high speed data center hosting services growing rapidly, which consequentially has led to building up of what is now referred to as “cloud infrastructure”.

Fundamentally, the growth of centralized data centers is driven by corporations to meet both the need for distributed computing – so as to be as close to the interaction point as possible, as well as the need to move from a Capital Expenditure (CapEx) model to an Operational Expenditure (OpEx) model. Another key advantage is that it allows a corporation to focus on their core businessthan be involved in the process of analyzing Information Technology trends as well as management of implementation practices and resources.

The huge volumes of data today as well as the demand for differentiated services offering on the computing, storage and networking, have driven the need for high-speed dynamically provisioned data centers. Low latency, for example is an important topic within capital markets, where the huge increase in algorithmic trading now requires firms to react to market events faster than the competition, to increase profitability of trades. This requires a very specific design. Data management between data centers for disaster recovery requires new SaaS models and optimized underlying design. Hosting of Online Ad eco-system players requires a tailored data center to meet the needs of the Ad networks connectivity models. This new set of requirements led us to put in place different design models with various clients.

Problem & Approach

For the business owner looking at developing and deploying new data center solutions, this translates into offering the following: (1 Data Centre Services: This includes providing rack space and power, with associated round-the-clock facilities management and site security control, for users to physically install their Information Technology and/or network equipment and (2) Connectivity Services:  This includes providing customized data connectivity solutions based on the very specific requirements of the applications. The data center network in turn gets connected to a high-speed backbone of a Network Service Provider to get to the external world, and again, satisfy the communication requirements of the services running within the data center.

Solution

In the various case studies we have worked on, we have leveraged an in-house developed methodology, which would start with working with the data center providers on their business case validation and tailoring needs for differentiated services, and putting in place a design architecture that would make it possible for this differentiation to be economically deployable. This is followed by a full cycle of vendor solutions comparison, optimization and selection, and working on tailoring the execution plan based on the specific ROI requirements of the data center owners and investors. Thus we have taken the project from pre-investment at the data center all the way to commercial deployment. Some projects have already been completed along these lines, and are running in live environment today.
